I 100% agree with Mike here. The AoA Greek list is really capable of
bunches of different (historically supported) styles, and the list still
works well with WAB2. The only problem I see with it is distributing the
list to new players, since it's only printed in two discontinued books.

Following the brutal attack by the Vaadwaur nearly three years ago the Romulan Star Empire was plunged into chaos not seen since the destruction of their Homeworld during the Hobus Event of 2387. Their new homeworld was devastated, their military broken, and their forces decimated. Many thought that the Romulans themselves would never be able to survive the new hand that the galaxy had dealt them.
Now, three years later, the Romulans are blossoming as members of the New Federation. At the request of the new Praetor, T'Jan, the Starship Enterprise has been dispatched for her induction ceremony on the tranquil world of Nova Roma. It's a mission that'll return the crew of the Federation Flagship back to their roots as they support their newest brothers and sisters to the future as valued members of the New Federation.
Nonetheless, things are not as they seem on the beautiful capital world of the former Romulan Empire. While supplies flow in the capital, shortages of every kind threaten the citizens outside of the Central City giving rise to a brutal black market more dangerous than any Galactic Supremacy disruptor. Can the crew of the Enterprise deliver the needed assistance to the struggling planet, or will greed consume the planet for all eternity?

Best example I've ever seen was Gene Wolfe's "Soldier of the Mist" and its sequels. Worth a read to see the point that Mike is making.

Some California melon-farmer thought that's what they intended, and that led to something new he called the "western way of war". Wrote a book about it, too. Maybe they're raisins, not melons, though. I heard it through the grapevine.

The "will" of the gods played a major "roll" (he he he) in the life of the Classical Greeks. I don't think we, today, understand how intertwined the gods and life were to them. The Oracles represent an interesting and often challenging approach to the part religion played in Greek battle. Some days the entrails were good, some days, not so good. Sometimes you get 3 Oracles sometimes 11.
My experience with the Classical Greek WAB army is that you need to win quick. You're strength is in your hoplites. You must close with your opponent, maximize the use of your Oracles to win combats and win the game in as few turns as possible. If the game draws out and you begin to run out of Oracles you will probably be defeated. The more hoplites you have in your army the better your chance of success. Don't waste too many points on Spartans, cavalry or too many skirmishers. 4-5 phalanxes (units) and some assorted support troops is best. If you want Spartans (as Jeff mentioned) don't take more than one unit of them.
The AoA Greek list was (and is) one of WAB's best. From that list you can make almost any army from the Classical period. Tweaks to the Sacred Band, Thessalian Cavalry and maybe a "mercenary" hoplite (something in between a generic hoplite and a Spartan) would fix most of what is missing from the list.
