RE: [WABlist] Building Celt Warbands

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

I have about 200 figures (60 sprews) and I need to
know how many to assemble as Slingers, Javelins an
Heavy infantry with mixed weapons.
So how many units of slingers would I need and how
many slingers in a unit?

-------> Generally skirmishers are best in units of 9-16 figures... too
many and they tend to get in the way of each other. Barbarian slingers
have been made extra crispy by the new rules, so I would include
javelinmen as well so as to not piss off your opponent.

Same for Javelins, how many units and how many men
in a unit?

------> Same. They are no longer warband so size does not matter,
however note that an upcoming errata will remove the "Mixed Weapons"
from these.

Also for the big Warbands with mixed weapons, how many
big units should I build and how many figures with the
thrusting spears or throwing spears, swords and shields
should I build?

-------> Generally bigger units are better. 30+ figures each allows the
ability to form six wide by plenty of ranks deep. Having extra ranks is
not a problem since they are so cheap, and this usually allows the unit
to shake off missiles. Throwing or thrusting spears are not needed,
mixed weapons is just fine. One small unit of fanatics is nice, since
they are immune to psychology and are good flank attackers if held back.
Each big mob should be lead by a chieftain or shaman or Warlord to
maximize attacks up front.
Barbarian Light cavalry is now the double bomb in WAB2 since they are
also equipped with Mixed Weapons....
Chariots also seem better under WAB2.
