You stand before a Starfleet Personnel Officer. He looks at you with curiosity and the piercing gaze of a man who's experienced in reading the truth in a person's body movements and language. You're nervous, and who could blame you.
"Ensign. Are you prepared for service in the Delta Quadrant?" He asks directly.
"I believe so, sir." You kick yourself for the quaver in your voice. You are sure that he's going to reject you.
The man makes a mark, that you can't make out on your file. "What is your opinion of the Delta Freedom Alliance?"
This is easy. "Sir! They were separatists, traitors to the Federation, and they disgraced their uniform. They may have gained some legitimacy over the years, but it doesn't change anything. They're still not worth a plug nickel, sir!"
The officer smiles broadly. "Well they don't feel that way. But,you got one right. Give me your opinion of the Romulan presence in the Delta Quadrant.
You are emboldened by the idea that you've figured out the DQ recruiter's mindset. "Sir, as long as they stay away from our ships and stations, they can do whatever they want. There is a treaty and we can't risk aggression with the Romulans afar, because it'll translate to bigger problems back home."
The personnel officer nods. "There's a lot of opportunity for an upcoming young officer such as yourself in the DQ, but it's not going to be a cakewalk. Depending on your assignment, you could face any number of challenges. ARE YOU READY?"
"YES SIR!"
Pushing back his chair the personnel officer extends a hand to you across the desk. "Then welcome to The Borderlands, Ensign. Your shuttle departs in 10 days."
