Welcome to the USS Leyton, an experimental temporal star ship charged with policing and protecting the time line....
Time travel had always been a special point of interest that reached back several hundred years. It started with Einstein and continued with the invention of the TV and Science Fiction. Then finally it became fact in the 29th Century.
People quickly learned how to change the time-line for their benefit however. The USS Leyton was the UFPs answer to the growing threat as it was given the mandate of patrolling the time line and keeping the temporal accords set by the United Temporal Accords of 2884 from being violated farther.
While out on a patrol trying to fulfill it's mandate of keeping the temporal time line safe the USS Leyton mysteriously vanished. After much searching and debate the Leyton was declared lost.
The crew found themselves trapped in a temporal wormhole. The crew was trapped
traveling through multiple time periods with sometimes days before the portal opens and sometimes months........

There has also not been any offer of an idea for a new character like a barkeep, who would run a bar (or lounge) on the USS Leyton where off duty personnel could gather and talk and .....????
