I agree here.  Sure there are boards that are "rapid fire" but a lot I've seen will say "No word count but try and match who you write with" (which seems fair).  Also PBEM seems to be dying not because forums are popular but how many times have you sat waiting for a post only to find out it was eaten in email or something was going on where it was delayed in posting?

OK,

Been following this, I don't have any great nostalgia trips to share, sorry but...I have to say the forum games I'm in (which are several) NONE of them are one liner games. In fact most posts are quite substantial in the 250-450 word range. So I guess it depends on what games you join.

Heya Shannon,

Thanks for sharing your experiences with me Shannon. There is always a certain amount of enjoyment we can get just by reliving our past memories, don't you think? Just like I enjoy the fact that you knew or had heard about Imperial Secrets. Even though I was never a major part of their story, your remembering helps me remember and enjoy it all the more!

I feel your concern for the PBEM media. It used to have a much greater following and I am not exactly sure what has changed. I think that the focus shifted from PBEM to Play-by-forum Roleplays, which I do not favor. I think my problem with forum roleplay is the new plague of one-liner posts, something that I don't think people did when PBEMing.

Sometimes I feel that Online RPing is due for an evolution and sometimes I even wish I could contribute to the cause. If only I had more time!

I remember Imperial Secrets. I never joined, because back when it was active, I was a wet behind the ears n00b. But I always wanted something like it.

My online RP experience is mostly confined to yahoo groups, with a dip into journaling and forums. I keep holding onto PBEMs, because it's my preference, but I fear they are dying. I began writing in Dragonriders of Pern fandom, and then started my own game in February of 2000. I had no business running a game, and it was kind of a mess, as I look back on it, but I probably haven't had nearly as much fun gaming since. From then I've dabbled into every genre of RP.

Like you, I think the best games for me were the ones where there were multiple stories going on, people stretched themselves with creativity, and nobody seemed too concerned about accumulating power.

My ideal gaming group has also changed. I'venever quite managed to embrace anything but freeform RP online. I remember back in the day wanting to GM a huge game. I have, and I don't want to again. I think I've become much more insular in the people I interact with. I'm far less likely to message someone out of the blue for role-play than I once have been. I'm content with a small group of people that I know I write well with and where the levels of drama are low. I don't always succeed, but it's what I try for.

Shannon
