Good morning everyone!
I just wanted to take a second to reminisce with everyone about our RP experiences in the past. Personally, I have over a decade of experience roleplaying and I have been roleplaying online since high school. It seems like back in those days there was a vast array of roleplays via the internet. I remember when we could ::Stroll into a room and command everyone's attention just because...well because we demanded it!:: via chat rooms and BBS websites where the chat scrolled past one post at a time. My most memorable of these was an AOL private chatroom roleplay in the Labyrinth universe and a Vampire-esque BBS mixed universe where I played a swordsman base on Yoshimitsu in the original Tekken. My brilliantly creative character name was... Toeshimitsu (Hey, I was a teenager!) I loved these old games because the universe was mixed and combined and many stories would be playing out at one time, some large and some small but all effecting the evolution of
the world and the RPs that happened after. Back in those days it seemed (maybe it was just to me) that there wasn't such a problem of god-moding. People seemed to go into rooms and accumulate power rather than just demanding to be recognized as being powerful.
As time went on, my interest waned in chat room RPGs. I don't know if that was because they were becoming less popular, because I was tired of constantly having to find new partners to roleplay with in an ever changing cast, or because there was an increasing amount of god-moders flooding chat rooms demanding to be the center of attention. Whatever it was, I was done. In 2001, a year after my own high school graduation, Yahoo Groups Launched and it saw a great number of new RPGs in it's early days. My first was called Imperial Secrets and it was awesome! It was exactly what I was looking for at the time and I dove in. It was a multi-continent, free-form roleplay though it's players were promoted on the quality and quantity of their posts. Soon after, I attempted creation of my first original world as well. Calling it Avalon, I recruited several players and moderators to take part, many of them of varying degrees of ability in writing. The story was the
rising of New Gods from the ashes of the old gods and their creation of a new world entirely. It went ok for a little while, then in-fighting started between people that though their abilities should out stretch other players on the list and so forth. It didn't help that I joined the Army in 2002 and found myself in Germany by the summer of 2002 and was in Iraq just after Christmas. The game fell apart and even though I tried to revive it when I got back from Iraq and back to the states, it never achieved more than a few hundred posts and even Yahoo Groups RPing had seemed to wane.
Now a days forum posting seems to be all the rage, as well as small groups and one on one searches. I have participated on many forums and have had many private rps going but it doesn't seem to capture the same interest.
If I had a perfect game it would be a single world were many different players could reside with a staff of story tellers. It would be a mixture of freeform roleplaying and tabletop gaming with stats and abilities but open ended and every choice a character made would have an effect on the world around them. Hell if I had the time I might even design such a game myself maybe with a whole new interface for Roleplaying. But free time for is fleeting these days!
Anyone else want to share some memories of days gone by and their RP experiences? If you don't want to share publicly then feel free to e-mail me personally!
