March 2015, NASA scheduled the maiden voyage of its new long range propulsion
system. A group of young cadets were chosen fresh out of training for the
mission. On the day of the launch the passengers were set up in cryogenic
stasis pods to conserve oxygen during the trip. The pods opened 180 days after
launch as scheduled and they found themselves light-years from home.
(5 years of adventures and nightmares befell the cadets in deep space.)
Then during a routine trip on their newest starship our seasoned crew entered
their sleeper beds. A task they'd done dozens of times during the last five
years. But something went wrong, the cryogenic system malfunctioned and rather
than wake its passengers on time the pods remained sealed. The ship careened
out into open space. Low oxygen and damaged equipment within the pods caused
their memories to revert to their first experience with cryogenic pods back on
earth. All the encounters and discoveries of the last 5 years suddenly claimed
by amnesia.
This ship looks completely alien to you. Certainly not the cramped white-
walled rocket you left earth in. Even your image in the mirror has changed,
you look older. There are many more cryogenic pods around you but most remain
hopelessly sealed, at least for the moment. The jumpsuit in your adjacent
locker boasts of a crew position you don't remember earning. Then you hear a
hiss in the room and the sounds of a hydraulic door lifting open another
sleeper pod. At least your not alone.
