Rpgs are kind of rare in this generation of consoles due to the niche genre and the high cost of making games now. Both Final Fantasy and Dragon Age are the kind of rare rpgs that has a bit of mainstream appeal that allow for a bigger budget to them.
PS3 still is your best bet for rpgs but that's not saying much. I'm not sure if you are just looking for good rpgs to play or basically more like good rpgs that are made with mainstream appeal.
The 2 games that would pop in my mind right now would be Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 and White Knight Chronicles International.
Mass Effect 2 for PS3 has a motion comic in it to let you know what Mass Effect 1 was about incase you didn't play the first one on the Xbox.
White Knight Chronicles International is probably the closest thing right now to an rpg that is like Final Fantasy in terms of presentation and budget. It is a first party rpg game from Sony that was design for a more broader audience. It's the first chapter or first part in a story line that continues in White Knight Chronicles 2. Half of the gameplay is the story gameplay that you would get from Final Fantasy while the other half is online questing with other PS3 White Knight players to complete quests to get materials to make equipments and weapons and to improve your rank. I thought the story gameplay was pretty good although incomplete because you only get part of a story since it's a first part storyline and won't get a bigger picture of the overall story until you play White Knight 2.
Before the PSN network went down, I was totally addicted to this game playing it every chance I get online with other players. It's a bit of a grind doing quests over and over to get materials to make your gear and equipment and to get your Rank up but playing with different people around the world made it more fun. I took a break from this game for now thanks in large part to PSN going down. I didn't want to go back to getting addicted again and having this game consume all my time. LOL.
Even though White Knight Chronicles International is over a year old, there's still a small North American community there playing online. All the European players have recently imported and converted their character over to the sequel already. The sequel for North America won't come out till September I believe. If you want to wait you can get White Knight Chronicles International 2 and that game itself will come with a free copy of the first game. The problem with waiting till the sequel to come out to play the first game is the online community. Right now some past players are slowly coming back to White Knight to try and get their rank up and materials up before the sequel comes out so they can be ready to import their character over to the first game. If you wait till the sequel comes out, you might have problems finding new players for the first game as everyone will move onto the sequel. If you decide to get White Knight International, I can always help you do some quests if need be.
Demon Soul comes closest to Dragon Age as it's an action rpg base on dungeon crawling and it's setting is very familiar to Dragon Age. Demon Soul is also consider to be the PS3 top rpg and Gamespot game of the year. Unlike Dragon Age, Demon Soul really is consider to be for the very hardcore rpgers out there as it's difficulty is one of it's strongest attraction as well as its addicting online play. Its an offline game that can be played online with co-op and pvp is what makes it so appealing. The game itself have no real story at all or any real character as all it is is have you going through various stages/dungeons and defeating the boss. Despite the lack of a story, it's gameplay is really great once you get the hang of it and understand it.
You really need patience and skills to play this game as the AI (monsters) in this game are really smart and tough to fight. This is one of those game where I really hate meeting any monster to fight because it can mean instant death if I don't fight carefully. This is like a horror rpg game too crawling in the dark dungeons or dark swamp with errie sound of monsters in the dark as your background music. It's bad enough your vision is blur because of the darkness but to have some orcs/or ghouls or whatever jump at you from a corner or chase you down was scary as hell. When I first played this game I was doing what I always did with the usual action rpg game and just charge in swinging your sword like a wide man and that usually work and kill everything off but that strategy doesn't work in this game. I realize that kind of charging strategy doesn't work in this game and I had to play the game like in real life, take one step at a time, fight one enemy at a time with no double team up, and learn how to dodge, roll, and block attacks. Nothing worst making it near to the boss fight only to see a couple of enemies with big club or sword standing in your way and it's like aww crap. That's how hard it was fighting regular enemies in this game.
The game was much easier on a second play through when I decided to try playing online and summoning other players to help me clear out stages. But of course you had the risk of being invaded by another player (Invader) trying to interfere with your quest to kill you. But that's also the beauty of the game that you can switch to being a bad guy and invade other people game for a change of gaming pace. The drawback of playing this game now after so long is that I don't know if the online community is there any more. Most people are now waiting for Dark Soul to come out in the fall. Still even if it's single player it's still one of the most challenging and rewarding game to play.
Dungeon Seige 3 just came out for PS3 and it's from SquareEnix and it's suppose to be similiar to Dragon Age.
PS3 also have a bunch of JRPGs if you want to try a more pure JRPG game that's a bit different from the Final Fantasy series. Disgea 3, Trinity Universe, Atelier Rorona, and Ar tonelico Qoga.
Trinity Universe gameplay isn't that great but I love the characters in this game. They are the most colorful and funniest characters around. This is more of a comedy/parody rpg game and it really made me laught quite a bit.
