[RPG_Player_Sanctuary] On Auroran Wings

When the greed of man spread across the continent of Chania the only path was war. Hungry states battled one another for hundreds of years setting fire to the once lush land. Over time one force, the Xianon Empire, grew powerful enough to inherit the remaining wasteland. With sword and spear they killed any and all who stood in their way forcing thousands to flee to the coasts. Caught between the swell of the sea and the waves of Xianon swords the last of the free peoples were slaughtered.

Chania was no more. There was only Xianon or death. The Emperor had annihilated all that dared defy his divinity, the sea of his tyranny drowning the land, submerging the weak and sweeping away the strong. Only the Grey Peaks remained above the dark tide of oppression.
During the centuries of Chania's struggles a simple, nomadic people sought refuge in this extensive range of mountains, climbing ever higher to hide from Xianon's reach. On the cracked and rough slopes they forged a new life, learning to live with the scarce resources and the thin air. They were the ancestors of the Aurorans and they were not alone.

No one knows when it was the Gre'Har Tribe arrived, but it was said to have been a particularly troubled time. They were gryphon, great flying beasts with eagle and lion features and the intelligence of any human. Legend tells of a young boy once befriending a Youngling and together thwarting the unwanted attentions of the downsiders. From then on bonding became choice and tradition, Auroran candidates selected by Gre'Har to be their ryder and lifelong companions, forever entwining their histories together. For centuries they soared above the problems of those below, living in relative solitude and peace.

That peace is at an end. They are the last free creatures of Chania, blasphemy in the eyes of the Xianon Emperor and an insult he will not suffer - for he will be defied no more than will death.

"On Auroran Wings" is a continuation of a previous tale that took an extended hiatus but has been brought back from the dead by a surprisingly dedicated group of players. It is not necessary for you to be familiar with the previous events, although if you wish to read it a compilation is available on the site entitled "Book." We're hoping to welcome some fresh faces and enthusiasm as we reboot.

The basic setting is a medieval time period. The land of Chania is ruled by a tyrannical Emperor who has crushed all opposition save one last refuge. This refuge is the Grey Peaks, a long range of mountains that is home to bonded pairs of griffons and their human riders. As the story begins the armies of the Emperor stand ready to attack the Grey Peaks while an as yet unknown force comes to Chania from the sea to challenge Xianon.

We welcome additional griffon riders (or ryders as we call them), but there is opportunity for a wide variety of character types. Civilians of the Grey Peaks, civilians of Chania, rebels, Xianon militia – if you have a character in mind we're happy to work with you to find a place for them.

While any character would be welcome there are also a few NPCs that would be useful.

1) Tran, Princess Xiang's brother
2) Korith, Tran's trusted companion
3) Siabet, Princess Xiang's handmaiden

Along with the above slots there is a new thread beginning soon. The Myerin are a people from a distant island group invading Chania to add additional conflict to an already conflicted realm. The Myerin are detailed in the "Glossary-ooc" thread. Specifically a leader for the Myerin wyvern riders would be useful, although you'll need to be a dedicated participant and a strong writer to take on the role. Other wyvern riders, shamans, or sailors would be nifty. If you have something else in mind we're open to discussion.

The game is free form (no dice) and while there is a GM (Storycrafter) and assistant GM (Principal Author) to keep things moving we aim to work as a collaborative. Indeed, the overall plot line was composed from the suggestions of the original group. We ask that you be able to post at least once or twice a week and let us know if you will be absent for any length of time beyond that. You will have to sign up on the site to participate, but it is a free service and an easy site to navigate. If you have any questions feel free to respond.

Thanks,

Lynn~
