They have come along away and lost so many. When they reached the farm, due to Carl being shot, the Atlanta survivors were willing to settle down. Make some roots, even as they searched for Sophia, Carol's daughter. At first the Greene family rebelled against it, particularly after Shane slaughtered the Walkers in the barn including Sophia but they soon welcomed them in. Even preparing to give Lori, who is pregnant, with Herschel's bed.
But the farm was going to be safe for the winter. But then they met another group of survivors and were laden with Randall a boy who Rick, Glenn, and Herschel refused to leave behind for the Walkers after his party abandoned him. Bringing him back to the farm, they were left with the task of finding what to do with him. Some said kill him. Others said let him go. Shane wanted to kill him but Dale intervened. It was with Dale's death by a Walker, and a mercy killing by Daryl, that they agreed to let Randall live. An out of control Shane, was unwilling to let that happen took Randall from the barn and broke his neck. Claiming he escaped after attacking him, Shane went out with Glenn, Rick and Daryl to track him down. Attacking Rick, Shane was killed by Rick and then in order to save his father, Carl shot Shane when he became a walker. Meanwhile Glenn and Daryl, find that Randall was a Walker though he wasn't bitten.
The gunshot from Carl's gun brings a herd of walkers towards the farm and in a bitter battle, the farm is lost. Lives were lost through the course of their time at the farm and not just during the battle. Dale. Shane. Sophia. Otis. Jimmy. Patrica. The Atlanta group was separated but slowly made it back together when they reunited at the car where they left food for Sophia. Meanwhile Andrea was left running alone in the woods only to be saved by a hooded figure. Rick explained that he killed Shane as the group, minus Andrea, stay in a destroyed building. He also tells them the disturbing news informed to him at the CDC as the prison looms in the distance.
"We're all infected."
Else where the Governor has set up Woodbury. A small town that is free from walkers and looks welcoming but there's dark secrets to be found. And at Camp David a group of survivors; some military, regular people, and even some government employees, take in the masses. They search for a cure. Not knowing they are all doomed to be:
The Walking Dead.
