Interesting! I was thinking it would be particularly fun to so a little adventuring in India in that period. Then there were the superstitions and monsters of that period. Lac La Rue (French Werewolf), and the Gollem of Prague are perfect examples of period monsters. And the Vampire was just getting started.

Actually the upcoming Three Musketeers movie this fall will have some of that steampunk flavor judging by the trailer I saw.

I'm thinking of mid 17th century. It was the age of pirates, cossacks, the 3 musketeers, witches, inventors and alchemists, exploration, and lost civilizations, and lots of sword play, and romance.

Subject: [RPG_Player_Sanctuary] Original(ish) Steampunk Fantasy?
Hello!
I'm pondering the development of an 'original' (putting it judiciously, as it wouldn't technically be canon, but would comandeer quite a lot of notions from quite a lot of places) PBEM set in a vaguely fantasy/steampunk setting. I've lots of particulars I'm mucking about with, but I just wanted to see if there'd be any interest before I go through the trouble of putting the thing together:
Conceptually, I'm thinking a sort of Discworld/His Dark Materials parallel 'verse centered around a city-state, but allowing for any loose cultures/ethnicities vaguely analogous to our own. Supernatural would be incorporated too, naturally, but I'd prefer magic and it's ilk to feel pervasive without being overwhelming. (I.e., no dapper, teenaged mages launching fireballs from their greasy palms; magic would be much too much a wobbly and capricious thing to use in mundane lives.) Definitely a host of fantasy races (elves, fey, ghosts, vampires, goblins, weres, etc.), too, again in line with the Disc, coexisting (grumblingly) in tight urban quarters. Technology would be... eh... mid-to-late 19th century. Ish. Maybe add in some airships (air-pirates, yo... and perhaps sea pirates) and totally-crazy-fantabulous-blunderbuss-man-melters... or something.
Or not.
But to give the thing a modicum of plot and direction, I'd honestly love to see a tone shift towards more unidealised themes, and a pitch-black layer blanketing the the whole thing. Add in, say, a smattering of Song of Fire and Ice or the sort of atmosphere garnered with the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Oodles of political intriguing, po-faced cynicism despite the fantastical environs, potential for violence, sex (gasp!), moral ambiguity, and various combinations thereof, but with a cheeky layer of comedy on top and a capacity not to take ourselves too seriously, and definitely, definitely, definitely no wangst. Characters who wangst on ad nauseum would forfeit their right not to be eviscerated.
So, to sum up, just take Game of Thrones, Firefly, Discworld, Pirates of the Caribbean, a considerable bit of Gaiman, a smidge of Shakespeare, Terry Gilliam, and undoubtedly loads others I'm not remembering, grate well, and bake according to your altitude.
So... yeah.
Just chewing on the need for something fun, and freeform, and different, mostly. Anyone at all keen on this idea?
If so, I'm at skorca89@yahoo.com; I can't guarantee I'll reply right away (exams, egads!), but I'd love to hear from anyone who might be interested.
