After the untimely deaths of Scott Summers, Charles Xavier, and finally Jean Grey...One could have thought that the worst-of-the-worst had come and passed.
But they were wrong.
On a crisp January dawn, the property was quiet. A soft hum started in the distance, growing in intensity until what sounded like thunder was rumbling across an otherwise clear morning sky. There was no visible attack, no growing white light in the distance as Logan lunged through the hallways, screaming for students to get out of bed and run. There lay only a flash, a loud eruption, and a multitude of red eyes beaming through the smoke.
As the remenants where the School for the Gifted had been, a deep crater of debris, showed on national television; the new President made the announcement that mankind would no longer live in fear of mutants. The Vice President, along with the american people, were beyond shocked when - after mutants had saved them from Magneto, another mutant slipped into the White House and assassinated the president with the warning "We will not protect you forever" carved into his chest.
Homeland Security, shortly after deploying their best into cities to begin hunting mutants, discovered blueprints for robotical monsters made specifically to hunt mutant kind. Sentinels. The manufacturing process' approval was swift, and when a warehouse of finished product was found; they were immediately deployed.
Days later, civilians were given Presidential Pardon-in-Action to kill mutants on sight.
