[RPG_Player_Sanctuary] Vive la difference: SS Fawkes!

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Eighteen months have passed since the Groumal-class heavy freighter SS Fawkes was successfully interdicted and seized by Starfleet Security on charges of smuggling arms along the Cardassian border.

Her captain, the ex-Maquis adventurer Materiel Droz, is now dreaming of revenge in a high-security penal colony; her luckless crew, some members of which faced serious charges of their own, have been scattered to the four winds; and Fawkes herself, now rusting in impound alongside Deep Space Nine, was discovered to be fraudulently registered to an Orion Syndicate affiliate who may or may not actually exist.

In the absence of any clear ownership status, and following a lengthy security investigation, Seventh Fleet Legal Services has determined that the property must now be retroactively attached to a long-closed intestacy case -- making Fawkes the legal inheritance of one Mathenwy Eidelwel, a 24-year-old petty officer communications specialist who has had no contact with her father, the vessel's last legal owner, since the opening days of the Dominion War. With no business experience, and only her wild pilot cousin to advise her, she is now faced with the decision of either taking over the freighter and trying to operate it herself, or selling it off to the Ferengi Commerce Authority, who retain a sizable unpaid lien on Fawkes going back more than fifteen years.

As if that wasn't trouble enough, Captain Droz, eager to clear her name and as-yet unaware of Eidelwel's existence, has offered the ship to a band of cutthroat Bajor Sector smugglers in exchange for a cache of high-tech weapons still hidden somewhere aboard the freighter. These weapons could, in the right hands, be traced back to the covert Starfleet Intelligence-managed arms-for-access scheme for which Droz and her crew were working at the time of their arrest. Of course, Starfleet Intelligence has no desire to see their expensive and politically controversial operation exposed; they are now trying to quash Droz's scheme without incurring the notice of Starfleet and local authorities.

Droz's smuggler allies have hired a trio of small-time grifters to infiltrate the freighter and track down the hidden weapons. Unfortunately for everyone, one of these grifters is also a Starfleet Security informant working for unsympathetic handlers who seem to have an agenda all their own. How Eidelwel and her tiny crew will manage to restore Fawkes to working order, while avoiding the machinations of these several competing groups, remains to be seen.

This Nova-based sim is rated 18+ for mature themes and profanity, and is targeted squarely at reliable, high-quality writers who may be a bit weary of the usual bureaucratic strictures of Starfleet service. There are no ranks or titles on SS Fawkes, and no one to enforce military discipline. Players are encouraged to develop characters with broad or unusual skill sets, and to apply them in creative, cooperative ways, giving the sim a more democratic, plot- and character-oriented feel. We build our stories around the desires, abilities and experiences of our operators instead of trying to shoe-horn everyone into missions for which they may not all be naturally suited. There is no hazing or abject servitude required here; everyone is on equal footing, and can contribute to an equal degree.

We have a big Web site located at http://ssfawkes.weebly.com/ with an extensive ship tour, mission details, and sim-specific database. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me through the site. My name is Liz.

Thanks for checking us out! I look forward to hearing from you.
