Slingers pissing people off remark by Jeff is his personal opinion. Not
everyone always agrees with him or with me, for that matter. A lot of
personal opinions about warhammer games are based on 1 game only.
-----> I do not need to play any more games to know that re-assessing
the barbarian light troops (3 pts each, or 4 pts with bucklers, 4 pts
with slings, and 5 pts with bows, no warband surge) is game altering.
The barbarian skirmisher used to be an effective screening troop in WAB,
warband psychology made them volatile and usually ineffective, often
unhinging whole sections of the barbarian battle line. Now they are
cheaper than any comparable skirmish troops on almost any list in the
game. This is an example of how disrupting the lists, changing small
bits can upset the apple cart-- especially when used as Roman allies-
which is now particularly effective.
For example 5 pt barbarian archers are way more effective than 8 pt
Auxiliary archers, sure the archers can have light armour and buckler..
but that makes them 11 pts!! Just for Ld 7?
Roman armies can now have an effective skirmisher flank screen of dozens
of cheap archers for about 120 pts.... and even in WAB2 a couple dozen
archers can hurt units of cavalry- especially the unarmored kind.
It's just the pinwheel effect of messing with wasn't broken in the first
place, although I do like the enhancements to chariots which were always
difficult to point in WAB because of their ineffectiveness-- removing
the "crash" rules is a big help, and describing how they work in units
is better. (even if the weapon costs is messed up). Too bad they left
off feigned flight for these since it the only WAB mechanism that really
works for Celtic tactics described by Caesar.
